Kaiser Permanente Becomes HealthSpan Today
Cleveland, OH (October 1, 2013)
Members of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Ohio will be served by HealthSpan Integrated Care beginning today, October 1. HealthSpan received approval from the Ohio Department of Insurance yesterday to begin providing care and coverage in Northeast Ohio.
The biggest change that most members will notice is the new name and signage that will begin appearing in coming weeks, as the health plan and the physician group begin operating as HealthSpan. HealthSpan is comprised of: HealthSpan Physicians, a not-for-profit medical group practice serving Northeast Ohio, and HealthSpan Integrated Care that will operate as a not-for-profit HMO.
“We are thrilled that 95 percent of the Ohio Permanente Medical Group physicians joined HealthSpan Physicians, ensuring continuity of care for our plan members,” said HealthSpan Integrated Care President Ken Page. “The high quality, affordable care that members expect will continue.”
Additionally, HealthSpan has committed to honoring all Kaiser Permanente Ohio benefits contracts throughout 2013 as well as honoring the 2014 contracts in place. Members will not experience any significant changes in care. All of the organization’s 15 locations will remain open.
Dr. Nabil Chehade, who will serve as HealthSpan Physicians’ President and Market CEO, said, “The heart of our practice is for every health care practitioner to work together to help our patients. Whether members see a primary care physician or a specialist, the physician and staff care team delivers an integrated approach to their treatment and preventative care. We make healthcare easier, because working together reduces the number of office visits and medical tests a patient needs. We offer unparalleled access in terms of office visits, phone calls with practitioners and even email access to caregivers. We are pleased to announce that HealthSpan Physicians will continue to deliver that model of integrated care.”
“Our highest priority is to reassure plan members that the benefits they have today will not change as a result of this transition,” said Ken Page. “Many people are currently making decisions about their 2014 coverage. We want to welcome them to HealthSpan.”
Over time, there will be changes in the hospital network serving the organization. HealthSpan has signed an agreement with University Hospitals to serve patients’ acute care needs starting in 2014. Every decision regarding where patients are treated will be made by a HealthSpan physician to best meet the patient’s needs.
The plans offered by Kaiser Permanente on the Health Insurance Exchange will still be available, and are among the most competitively priced in the Cleveland market.
